Artist: Impey
Song: “The Alchemist”
Album/EP: The Deluge

A dark and moody instrumental from UK producer Impey, B-side “The Alchemist” offers up a sparsely populated landscape that dips into surrealism. Watch/Listen:

Artist: My Pleasure
Song: “Thank You for Alphabetising My Spice Rack”
Album/EP: Mostly Happy

Yes, it’s silly. Watch/Listen:

Artist: Moonbeau
Song: “Like The Night”
Album/EP: Single

Hooky and varied electro pop, Moonbeau’s debut single squeezes every last possible sound out of a well-explored MIDI synth. And it’s fun as hell. Watch/Listen:

Artist: Arthur Buck
Song: “American Century”
Album/EP: Arthur Buck

Eclectic and a bit esoteric, “American Century” is an interesting spin from the minds of Peter Buck and Joseph Arthur, of R.E.M. Artist: The War and Treaty
Song: “Healing Tide”
Album/EP: Healing Tide

Bombastic soul with a driving beat and heart to spare, “Healing Tide” is the debut single from Michigan duo The War and Treaty. How couldn’t it be, with an opening effort as infectious as this? Search for familiarity where you can, but don’t be afraid to be taken in by this quirky track! Featuring impish instrumentals careening around a surprisingly catchy hook in spite of itself, this single is an interesting evolution of both artists’ material. Yes, it’s short. Noire isn’t quite the term for it, but a mild darkness does settle comfortably over this one. Yes, it’s so lo-fi the over-processed may very well blow out tinny speakers. Endearingly warm and unapologetically romantic, there’s a strong communal spirit that especially comes through in the backing vocals. Chock full of old school organ and soaring vocals, this toe-tapper harkens back to Motown heyday in an authentically glorious way. “How Does It Feel?” just touches that sweet spot. Woozy and weary without feeling overbearingly worn-down, there’s almost a future-jazz element at play in this tune. But don’t overlook the clever writing in this single off My Pleasure’s second studio album – slyly incorporating turmeric and saffron rhymes, switching between measured and hectic at the drop of a hat, studying concepts of self-control and manipulative actions… Basically, there’s a lot to unpack in this 96 second track. Soulful R&B with the magic touch of a sizzling producer, this low-key banger with a meaningful message well deserves to be an early summer ear worm. “Like The Night” is bright and optimistic, much like the group’s future. and Fistful of Mercy fame.
