Here’s something we’ll have to check: Does Spotify’s chart change on Sundays? What’s the best smart speaker strategy for musicians? Want to save a life? These are my weekly music recommendations for GlobalNews.ca. Look at all the bands that are making money by playing NASCAR events. Damon Albarn once had a chance to work with Prince, but he declined because Prince wouldn’t let him smoke in the studio. Let’s explore that. This UK festival is going to offer drug tests to make sure people who take drugs don’t take drugs that will kill them. Does radio make you happy? Apparently. It was fifty-one years ago today that the Beatles released Sgt. New Yeezy merch…
…and a salute to Prince’s art and commerce. Here’s a look back on The Pursuit of Happiness Love Junk album, 30 years after its release. (Via Tom)
You can use a smart speaker to remotely fire a gun? Pepper in North America. Now it’s getting released. A statue of Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham has been unveiled in his hometown. And now for music news on June 2, 2018. This Australian electro musician called gay people “abominations.” We’ll let the Internet take it from here. It had come out the day before the UK. (Via Tom)
Dave Grohl wrote a song for David Bowie which he never used. Shakira is getting rid of her place in Miami…
…and even musicians are into the tiny house thing. Learn “The Macarena.” Seriously.

38 years ago today: The Great Toronto Punk Rock Riot

It was total craziness and made all the papers and all the newscasts thereby exceeding the expectations of Teenage Head’s manager. The Forum could only old maybe 5,000 people, but thousands more tried to get in. This has gone down in history as the Great Toronto Punk Rock Riot. He’s become some kind of viral star. Teenage Head had was booked to play a free show at the old Ontario Place Forum, a beloved yet now defunct amphitheatre with a circular rotating stage. But then just a few months later, one of the bandmembers was injured in a car accident, which required months of recovery and caused the band to miss some crucial showcases in the U.S. That’s gotta count for something, right? Part of the thinking was that this would be the show Teenage Head never got to finish as the result of another riot: The infamous Last Pogo two years earlier. The band was doing extremely well with their second album, Frantic City. Don’t do this, people. All local radio stations were playing songs from the record and it looked as if Teenage Head was destined for global greatness. All momentum was lost and they never managed to get it back. That only encouraged people to jump the fence, adding to the chaos inside. This sort of thing happens at Ontario Place a couple of times a year, but no contemporary incident has matched what happened on June 2, 1980, when dozens of people tried to breach the water barrier. To maximize exposure, the group’s manager decided to amp things up by bussing in fans from all over the region. But when the transported fans were added to the people who were already looking forward to the gig, the crowd ended up being too big. You may have seen the story about the dude who got thrown out of Tuesday’s Slayer concert at the Budweiser Stage in Toronto and then tried to swim back in. While cops descended, dozens of people hit the water and swam for the Forum. While your love for music is admirable (a) the water is dirty; (b) it’s very, very cold; (c) you end up looking like a knobhead. It was the perfect sort of publicity. The fact that it was shaded by big trees and surrounded by water on three sides made it a rather bucolic setting. While the situation devolved in the venue–stage invasions, thrown objects, fights–security closed the gates to Ontario Place. In its day, it was a very popular venue. Still, Teenage Head has the distinction of being the only Toronto punk band to be at the centre of two riots.

How long does it take a song to jump the Atlantic? Well, it depends…

Territories that tend to be later to the party are France (+10.6 days) and Italy (+5.7 days). Songs can spin around the planet at the speed of light the second they’re released. This is from Medium.com. Still, there was an awfully long lag between release and listening. Back in the pre-Internet days, a song could gain all kinds of traction and popularity in Europe and remain totally unknown in North America. Looking at the individual territories Sweden (+0.2 days) is the quickest to catch up, followed by Norway (+0.3 days) and Denmark (+1.1 days). In real life it takes approximately 7 hours to reach Europe when you’re traveling from The United States, but how does that translate to music? It might take weeks or months for an import to be stocked by, say, a record store in Toronto and for it to start selling in meaningful numbers–if ever. When we take the average of all countries and their associated tracks we can rank the territories based on overall travel time. Read the whole story here. 😉
By looking at the date a particular track entered Spotify’s top 50 in the various European countries and comparing this to the first chart date in the U.S., we can determine if Europe is behind or leading. The Internet has resolved all that, of course. In theory, anyway. Combining all territories we see an average of +2.5 days. It turns out that human beings are still a little tardy when it comes to catching on to new music on either side of the Atlantic. If Depeche Mode released something in the UK on Monday, we might be able to buy the import by the weekend. There were exceptions, of course.
Well, it depends… How long does it take a song to jump the Atlantic?

Canada takes the fast, open road; supports net neutrality
That power rests entirely with the CRTC and the oversight of the courts,” Cogeco Communications spokeswoman Nancy Bouffard told the Globe and Mail. They have no independent choice regarding which sites to block. “That is a very important signal to send to the industry.”
This is all well and good and could—should – take on added weight when Parliament eventually takes up those acts. At the end of 2017, Canadaland reported that the CRTC received a draft proposal to develop the Internet Piracy Review Agency, a safe-enough sounding not-for-profit agency that “would maintain a list of websites it had determined were peddling pirated materials and force all internet service providers in the country to block access to them.”
Michael Geist, a law professor at the University of Ottawa, called the draft proposal “enormously problematic” and “a dramatic shift. The measure, sponsored by MP John Oliver of Oakville, was unanimously adopted. This is a prospect of significant internet regulation being done by the CRT and without any court oversight,” he told Canadaland. In a smart, essential and crucial move, the Canadian Parliament voted in support of net neutrality, protecting the ability of Canadians to access the internet without considering or worrying about paid fast lanes or throttled service messing things up. There’s no set time frame for that as of yet, but keep in mind that there’s an effort reportedly underway by some of the big telecom companies in Canada to derail things. “Requiring that net neutrality be a guiding principle in the review and update of these acts signals a clear commitment to placing consumers and content providers first,” Oliver said, according to Financial Post. “Internet service providers remain entirely neutral. Leaders of all three major political parties voted in support of M-168, which asks the House of Commons to recognize five things. While not a formal bill, it states that Canada’s net neutrality regulations have allowed the internet to thrive thanks to “principles of openness, transparency, freedom and information.” It also highlights the “importance of continuing to preserve ‘open internet’ to various aspects of democracy and citizen and societal well-being” and a call on the Canadian government to incorporate net neutrality in the upcoming Telecommunications Act and Broadcasting Act reviews, Digital Journal reports. A representative for the FairPlay coalition, which supports the draft proposal, claims it is respectful of net neutrality.

Apple vs. Spotify: Is it time for a truce of some sort?

Apple vs. Spotify: Is it time for a truce of some sort?
Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference starts tomorrow in San Jose and along with the usual dose of rumours, there are plenty of people offering advice about how Apple should move forwards, especially on the music front. Keep reading. What, for example, should Apple do about Spotify? At the very least, the company needs to introduce some functionality to third-party music services through SiriKit that opens up voice commands to play specific songs and user playlists while leaving premium functionality for Apple Music where users can say stuff like “play more songs like this,” and “play something I’d like,” etc., etc. This is from TechCrunch:
With WWDC a couple of days out, we’re coming up on one year since Apple  first showed off its glitzy answer to the Amazon Echo and Google Home smart speakers. For all the criticisms levied against the device, the most weighty has been the fact that there isn’t even a vague reason to consider buying the speaker unless you are an Apple Music subscriber. It took more than 8 months from then for the HomePod to finally hit shelves, and it took up until a couple of days ago for all the promised functionality to arrive. Four months since launch, it’s clear Apple delivered some awesome hardware, but there are plenty of features I want to see the HomePod pick up when Apple comes to the stage at its annual developer conference to talk iOS 12. No one is expecting the Apple hardware to be designed around listening to Spotify,  but it’s frustrating and confounding that Apple won’t play ball at all. For Apple Watch users who want to listen to non-Apple Music tunes the same is true to a lesser degree.

Good job, Internet. It took me a second to realize that someone was messing with The Muppets. (Via Tom)

(Future) weird real record alert: I wonder if this one will be yellow?
(Via) You can also press various substances into vinyl records like, say, blood or the cremated ashes of a loved one. Back in 2012, they got into the blood-in-a-record game for a Record Store Day release which included the precious bodily fluid of Chris Martin, Kesha and Erykah Badu, among others. Next on Wayne Coyne’s mind is a record by Miley Cyrus and the Dead Petz. Don’t you?”
Miley and the Lips have always had a weird sort of relationship that goes back years. Speaking with The NME, Coyne said “We’d get a good amount of Miley’s pee and mix it with some glitter and put that in. People have experimented with wood, ice, and even hash resin. I think that would up the ante. And you know she’d be up for it, right? Then we have the Flaming Lips. While polyvinyl chloride will remain the raw material for vinyl records for the foreseeable future, but that doesn’t mean it’s the only thing from which records can be made.

Sticky Fingers – Laika lyrics

Worth the weight of love we have now lost? Didn’t have to deceive me, we were friends
Slingshot, hurts that I’m not dreaming
Slowly overheating, you shook my hand

[Verse 3]
Silence, a neon glow lights up
A crackle of a speaker then everything goes dark
And there’s nothing except this floating dream
I’m flying by the moon now, I think it’s time to sleep
I think it’s time to sleep

[Chorus]
Master, why’d you have to leave me? [Outro]
We were friends
We were friends Light speed, but I’m feeling kind of slow
Gazing out the space screen, memories below

[Chorus]
Master, why’d you have to leave me? Worth it breaking trust? [Verse 1]
I feel it running in my veins
Struggling with breathing, suffocates my brain
There’s no air in gravity’s erase
I am the runaway dog, they sent me into space

[Verse 2]
It’s a little planet flying through the stars
I don’t wanna sit down, how much did I cost? Didn’t have to deceive me, we were friends
Slingshot, hurts that I’m not dreaming
Slowly overheating, you shook my hand
And I’m lonely, taking in the moonlight
It’s not time for space flight for this dog
Was it worth it?

Jake Shears – Creep City lyrics

[Verse 1]
You said to come and sort your mind
But did you mean it?, Ooh, but did you mean it? Just have a look at them ears [?]
Full of ice cream sundaes
Funny no one wondered who’s thumb I was under
Never gave a goddamn, I gave you 21 grand
Cause baby I love you more than the trash can

[Pre-Chorus]
I said I’d give it one more try
Now I’m giving up the good life
I’d make a bad wife

[Chorus]
Get me out of this creep city
I’m flat broke and I don’t look pretty right now
Just get me out, out, out, out
All the dogs in the back been smothered
And these cats don’t make good lovers
This town’s on cursed ground, ground, ground, ground

[Bridge]
And if there’s a sign to show me from this world back to mine
Or tell me you’ll try, or at least please reply
Sincerely I’ll be waiting, ’til I die

[Outro]
Creep city
No I’m never gonna say goodbye [?]
Sin city
But something is alive Then warmed the bread and poured the wine
I thought I’d seen it all, until you broke that seventh wall

[Pre-Chorus]
I said I’d hang on for the ride
Now I’m hanging on for dear life
Is that a real knife? [Chorus]
Get me out of this creep city
I’m flat broke and I don’t need pity right now
Just get me out, out, out, out
All the dogs in the back been smothered
And these cats don’t make good lovers
This town’s on cursed ground, ground, ground, ground

[Verse 2]
Was the judge not clear?

John Newman – Fire In Me lyrics

[Intro]
I’m never gonna let it go
I’m never gonna let it go

[Verse 1]
I’m starting with my intuition
I’m starting with my strengths
I’m getting back my old ambitions
Returning once again
My knuckles are so red and raw
From breaking through these walls
Sick of all the others talk
And the laughter of my fall

[Pre-Chorus]
I was a spark in the night, but you drown me out
So, I’ll take the walls, I’m inside, and I’ll burn them down

[Chorus]
Cause I still got a fire in me
I never wanna let it go
I never wanna let it go
I-I-I-I I still got a fire in me
I never wanna let it go
I never wanna let it go
I-I-I-I I still got a fire in me
I never wanna let it go
I never wanna let it go
I-I-I-I I still got a fire in me
I never wanna let it go
I never wanna let it go
I-I-I-I I still got a fire in me

[Verse 2]
I’ve dealt with all my evils
And I’m dealing with them twice
There will never be a sequel
And the curtain will never rise
Although my body has been aching
I head on to the rocks, oh no
I’ve never left the beacon
And I won’t be letting go

[Chorus]
‘Cause still got a fire in me
I never wanna let it go
I never wanna let it go
I-I-I-I I still got a fire in me
I never wanna let it go
I never wanna let it go
I-I-I-I I still got a fire in me
I never wanna let it go
I never wanna let it go
I-I-I-I I still got a fire in me
I never wanna let it go
I never wanna let it go
I-I-I-I I still got a fire in me

[Pre-Chorus]
I was a spark in the night, but you drown me out
So, I’ll take the walls, I’m inside, and I’ll burn them down
I was a spark in the night, but you drown me out
So, I’ll take the walls, I’m inside, and I’ll burn them down

[Chorus]
‘Cause still got a fire in me
I never wanna let it go
I never wanna let it go
I-I-I-I I still got a fire in me
I never wanna let it go
I never wanna let it go
I-I-I-I I still got a fire in me
I never wanna let it go
I never wanna let it go
I-I-I-I I still got a fire in me
I never wanna let it go
I never wanna let it go
I-I-I-I I still got a fire in me
I-I-I-I I still got a fire in me
I-I-I-I I still got a fire in me

Steven Curtis Chapman – Remember To Remember lyrics

[Verse 1]
Well, I’ve been looking back over my shoulder
Retracing every step trying to unforget
And I see the mountaintops I’ve journeyed over
And I see the valleys deep where I crawled on my hands and knees
Pages and memories filled with joy and stained with tears
They call my name and if I listen, I can hear them saying

[Chorus 1]
Remember the way He led you up to the top of the highest mountain
Remember the way He carried you through the deepest dark
Remember His promises for every step on the road ahead
Look where you’ve been and where you’re going
And remember to remember
Remember, remember

[Verse 2]
And now I’m looking out at the road that’s waiting
But my eyes can only see so far out ahead of me
As sure as the sun will shine there’ll be more mountains I will climb
And more deep dark shadowlands where desperate faith is all I have
Until I’m home, I’m resting all my hope and trust
In the only One whose name is: God with us

[Chorus 2]
Remember the way He led you up to the top of the highest mountain
Remember the way He carried you through the deepest dark
Remember His promises for every step on the road ahead
Look where you’ve been and where you’re going
And remember to remember

[Bridge]
Remember the day is coming when He’s going to wipe the tears away
He’ll look in our eyes and say:
Remember the way I led you off the mountain
Remember the way I carried you, ohh

[Chorus 3]
Remember the way He led you up to the top of the highest mountain
Remember the way He carried you through the deepest dark
Remember His promises for every step on the road ahead
Look where you’ve been and where you’re going
Look where you’ve been and where you’re going
And remember to remember

[Outro]
Oh remember to remember
Oh remember to remember
Oh remember to remember

Herman Düne – Someone Knows Better Than Me lyrics

They keep them at hand for the death of celebrities
And I said I will never get used to how twisted news can be
But someone knows better than me
Someone knows better than me
And then I remembered one month of June in Coney Island
When I was hiding a bottle of beer in the sand
It was too late for the ride(?) and it was too late for the Cyclone
Then I didn’t have a girlfriend, but I didn’t feel alone
I didn’t need anyone to watch the sunset or maybe my brother
And now every time the sun goes down I hope we will be together kissin’
Baby listen
Baby I don’t want to be without you
It would make me so mad, I wouldn’t know what to do
I was blind but now I can see
But someone knows better than me
Someone knows better than me
Someone knows better than me In August I went out to the country for resting
There was a family of swallows in the barn there nesting
I saw the little ones and their feathers were breezy
I pictured their life and I thought it was easy
I said these guys just have to sit there and squeak
And their mother comes back with insects in her beak to feed them
You said, man
Swallows migrate and it is amazing
They fly from Alaska to Argentina with their little wings
And I said I had never heard of such a journey
But someone knows better than me
Someone knows better than me
And then we were in Stockholm and it was beautiful in July
And the day after this famous Swedish director Ingmar Bergman died
And all the national papers had some special issues
With beautiful pictures and interesting interviews
I figured it was unlikely that they would gather all this stuff overnight
They must have needed much more time than this to write
And he felt rancid
And you said David
David don’t you know about pictures?

John Newman – Olé lyrics

[Verse 1]
Lowkey, you won’t tell none of your friends about me
You won’t tell them I occupy your dreams and your thoughts
Look at what we have started
I feel so good when I leave your apartment

[Pre-Chorus 1]
I know, there’s no telling how far you can go
And you don’t want to hear about my love and my lust
Babe that I have been feeling
I kiss you once, then I stare at the ceiling

[Chorus]
Olé, you bring too much sunlight to my day
And only you can chase the pain away
You bring too much sunlight to my day, my day

[Verse 2]
My heart speaks
I ain’t seen you or been with you for weeks
But I see online that you’ve begun to be
A good girl and take trips with your boyfriend
Being attentive, continue to pretend

[Pre-Chorus 2]
But no, cause there’s no telling how far you can go
You’ve hidden my name on your phone so you can
Call me to tell me you’ve been going through hell
Left him alone and you booked in a hotel

[Chorus]
Olé, you bring too much sunlight to my day
And only you can chase the pain away
You bring too much sunlight to my day, my day

[Bridge]
I can’t control myself around you
I can’t control myself around you
I can’t control myself around you
I can’t control myself around you
I can’t control myself around you
I can’t control myself around you
And I’m singing… [Outro]
Olé, you bring too much sunlight to my day
And only you can chase the pain away
You bring too much sunlight to my day, my day
Olé, you bring too much sunlight to my day
And only you can chase the pain away
You bring too much sunlight to my day, my day
